Kon’nichiwa!

Below I have for you an interactive map of Okayama that I created. This shows what you need to know if you want to make a stopover in Okayama. This includes Okayama Station, the famous Korakuen Garden, Okayama Castle, as well as notable tram stops. (I think the tram is the best way to get around!)

I made a 4-hour stopover in Okayama for the garden and castle, so this map is based on that.

First I want to let you know what’s on the map to give you a better understanding of what you’re looking at!

Notable Okayama attractions

The most notable Okayama attractions are marked with a pink star pin, and a few more things are marked with a magenta pin.

You’ll arrive by train at Okayama Station, and follow the signs to the east exit.

And when it comes to a quick stopover, Okayama is quite simple! The 2 things you need to see are the Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle, and that’s exactly what I did. You can first go to the garden, and then leave out of the south gate of the garden to walk across the bridge to the castle.

While you need to pay the entry fee to enter the garden area, you can see the castle from the outside without any admission fee. It’s free to roam around the outside of the grounds. You can enter the castle for a fee to go up to the top of the castle tower. The inside of the castle is set up more like a museum-style type thing.

I’ve also included on the map a few easy stops you can make along the way.

The Momotaro statue (“peach boy“) is right outside the train station. You can stop by on your way to the tram stop.

The Okayama Shrine is the most notable shrine in Okayama, and you can make a quick stop by after you get off at the tram stop near the garden and castle.

You will pass by a small restaurant called Hekisuien right after you exit the south gate of the garden your way to the castle. You can eat black sesame soba with castle views!

You can find coin lockers at Okayama Station immediately to the left upon exiting the shinkansen ticket gate, and when I went there was manned luggage storage immediately to the right.

See my walk-through of taking the shinkansen to Okayama from Kyoto.

Tram stops

The notable tram stops are marked with a yellow pin.

For purposes of going to the Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle, there are only 2 tram stops you need to know about. The tram stop near Okayama Station is called the Okayama ekimae stop, and the tram stop for both the garden and castle is called the Shiroshita stop.

There is also a bus that leaves from just outside Okayama Station with a drop-off in front of the garden, but I think the tram is fun! See more about how to get to Korakuen Garden by tram.

Okayama hotels

Hotels to consider are marked with a gold pin.

Hotel Granvia Okayama is located a few minutes by foot from Okayama Station east exit.

Okayama Koraku Hotel is a quick taxi ride or 10 minute walk from Okayama Station on the east exit side. It’s a 2 minute walk from a tram stop (Nishigawa-Ryokudokoen stop). It’s just across the street from Nishikawa Canal.
