The Goryokaku Tower is where you go to see the iconic star-shaped fort of Hakodate! You can buy tickets when you arrive. You can also walk around the Goryokaku Fort Park for free. In the middle of the park is the Old Magistrate’s Office of Hakodate where you can walk inside (for a fee) to see traditional Japanese-style rooms. You can get to Goryokaku by tram!

The Mount Hakodate ropeway is how you can get the iconic bay views of Hakodate! The Mount Hakodate Observatory is at the top of the ropeway, where there’s a seating area so you can sit and relax while you take in the views. It’s a 30 minute walk to the ropeway from Hakodate Station. Take the waterfront route along the red brick warehouses. Or, you can take the tram.

The Hakodate morning market has lots of stalls that sell fresh seafood, local produce, and more Hokkaido specialties. Minutes by foot from Hakodate Station. You can explore on your own, or do a guided tour of the morning market.

The Motomachi neighborhood is the historic neighborhood representing a time in the 1800s when Japan opened up to the western world. You can see the western influence throughout Motomachi. There are good views from Motomachi Park, which can be a good starting point if arriving by tram. Motomachi is a 30 minute walk from Hakodate Station and the morning market.

More in Motomachi: The famous Hakodate slopes are in the hilly Motomachi neighborhood! The most famous hilly street is Hachiman-zaka slope. You can look down and see the water. The old public hall of Hakodate is the iconic blue and yellow western-style building of Hakodate. There is an entry fee to walk inside (info), but you can also see it from the outside for free. This is right by Motomachi Park so it’s a good area for views. You can also see Russian influence at the Hakodate Orthodox Church. Learn about the history of Hakodate from the owner of a local Russian cafe.

The iconic Kanemori red brick warehouses are in a waterfront area. It’s a 15-20 minute walk from Hakodate Station and the morning market, and it’s on the way to Motomachi. You can also take the tram here.

Lucky Pierrot is a burger restaurant chain that has won the award for “best local burger store in Japan.” Lucky Pierrot burger shops ONLY exist in Hakodate! There are 17 shops in Hakodate, including near Hakodate Station and the red brick warehouse district.

I ate at a ramen shop called Tsubaki (reviews) in the red house warehouse area.
