I am here to tell you about my experience in using the coin lockers at Sakuragicho Station for luggage storage in Yokohama!
Sakuragicho Station can be a convenient spot to start or end your time in Yokohama, as it’s a gateway to the Minato Mirai waterfront area. It’s a 20 minute walk to the Cup Noodles Museum.
You can find coin lockers for luggage storage at train stations all across Japan, and they can make planning out logistics so much easier! It allows you to do more things since you can leave your luggage behind at train stations. These are self-service storage lockers.
They are very convenient if you want to explore for a few hours before checking into your hotel or accommodation (which is what I used them for at Sakuragicho Station), or if you want to stop by a place for a few hours before you head to your next destination by train… or if you need a place to store your luggage for a few hours before you board a cruise ship (which I did at another train station on another day)!
Sakuragicho Station was my first stop in Yokohama, luggage and all.
Below I’ll show you a bit of what to look for and how to use coin lockers.

How to use coin lockers at Sakuragicho Station
There are coin lockers in different areas of Sakuragicho Station.
The coin lockers I used were right in front of the JR Sakuragicho Station south exit ticket gate, outside the ticketed area, and it was right next to a tourist information center.
It was a Thursday in May around 2pm, and there were plenty of lockers available.

I highly recommend you look for tourist information centers at train station of any new city you visit! They almost always have helpful tourist maps! At the Sakuragicho Station tourist information center, you’ll get more ideas of how to spend your days in Yokohama.

1. Find the coin lockers!
So your first step is actually finding the coin lockers.
In general, once you get to a train station, start looking for signs for “coin locker.” It’s also usually in English.
I seem to recall that I actually didn’t see any signs for coin lockers when I first arrived at Sakuragicho Station, but I did eventually find a locker section.
JR East does report that coin lockers at the JR Sakuragicho Station can fill up early, especially on weekends and holidays. If you arrive to no available coin lockers, I would recommend that you stop by the tourist information center and ask for luggage storage suggestions. They might be able to refer you to a manned baggage storage service nearby, or they can tell you about more coin locker areas.
2. Put luggage in locker
You’ll find an available locker that will fit your luggage.
There are different size lockers, which are different prices based on the size.
👆 There are small, medium, and larger lockers, which cost 400 yen, 500 yen, and 700 yen (US$3-5).
👆 I put a carry-on size luggage in the locker, plus 2 backpacks.
👆 The biggest Sakuragicho Station coin locker was 700 yen (US$5).
3. Follow the instructions on the screen and make payment
These coin lockers are electronic, so you’ll use the touch screen to use the locker. It will be in Japanese, but look for the English button! Then, just follow the prompts!

👆 You want to make sure you’re locking the right locker!
👆 This particular locker was the type that would lock and unlock the locker using an IC card.
These coin lockers only accepted IC cards (like a suica card or pasmo card) as a form of payment.
This is yet another reason to get an IC card at the first train station you arrive at in Japan! Not only will it make taking the train and bus easier in Yokohama and the rest of Japan, you can easily pay for other things too, like for your coin locker or even at convenience stores!
There are some coin lockers that accept both IC cards and cash. And while becoming increasingly rare, at some train stations, you may find coin lockers that require literal 100 yen coins. That’s where “coin locker” got its name from!

4. Off you go to explore Yokohama!
Feel happy that you have gotten rid of your luggage and you can maximize your day in Yokohama!
The first thing I did was go to a small ramen shop that was 5 minutes away from the train station! I went to Ramen Kaibutsu. Normal hours: 11am to 3pm and 6pm to 10pm, closed Wednesdays.

5. Return to Sakuragicho Station to get your luggage back
Follow the steps required!
In the case of the particular locker I used, I went back to the touch screen to get my locker open.

I used the Sakuragicho Station coin lockers in May 2025. Your experience may vary. Also in Yokohama, I have also used coin lockers at Motomachi-Chukagai Station on a cruise embarkation day, which was quite convenient as it was a 5-10 minute walk from getting on the free shuttle at Yamashita Park to Daikoku Pier.
