Popular must-see spots (Hakone loop)
On my map below, the popular must-see spots are marked with a pink pin.
The best way to see the Owakudani volcano valley‘s steam vents is by going above it by ropeway! You can see it from land too. The most common route is from Gora to Owakudani, which is a combination of cable car and ropeway.
The Hakone shrine is THE red torii shrine gate that Hakone is known for. If you want to get the iconic picture with shrine gate, it’s possible you’ll need to stand in a long line (reviews).
While there are many places around Hakone that you can see Mount Fuji, there’s a spot marked on google maps as “Best view of Fuji” (reviews).
If you want to do the common Hakone Loop (which will allow you to see all of the above popular must-see sights), then the 2-day or 3-day Hakone Pass will provide you will all necessary transportation included, including the train from Tokyo. You just show your pass to get through ticket gates, instead of buying individual tickets.
If you ONLY want to see the volcano valley, there is a 2-day Owakudani pass, and you can choose to get transportation included from Odawara Station or Shinjuku Station.
There are no one-day passes.
